Does the unit cost update automatically when material prices change?

The unit cost is calculated and filled in automatically only when the template is created or edited, based on the material’s average cost or its last purchase price (depending on the setting configured in “Unit Price Calculation” under Construction settings). The cost shown in a previously saved template does not update automatically just because the material’s price changes afterward; to get the latest value, you need to open and edit the template.
