Editing a Financial Period
You can edit the details of an open financial period, such as the period duration or description, before it is closed.
Before You Begin
- Editing a financial period requires the “Manage Closed Periods” permission.
- Editing is only available for financial periods with an “Open” status — closed periods do not show an edit option.
Steps to Edit a Financial Period
- Click on the “Accounting” menu.
- Click on “Accounting Settings”, then navigate to “Financial Periods.”
- Click “Edit” next to the open financial period you want to edit, or open the period view screen and click “Edit.”
- The “Financial Period Details” screen appears. You can edit the following fields:
- Period (Required): Change the financial period duration from the dropdown: “1 Year,” “6 Months,” “3 Months,” “1 Month,” or “Custom.”
- Start Date: Displayed as read-only and cannot be edited, except for the first financial period in the account where it can be edited normally.
- End Date: Automatically calculated based on the selected duration and start date, and displayed as read-only — unless “Custom” is selected from the Period field, in which case you can edit it freely.
- Description (Optional): Edit the descriptive note for the financial period.
- Click “Save” to apply the changes, or “Discard” to go back without saving.
How the System Works
- Editing a financial period is reflected in the “Activity Log” tab of that period.
- The period start date remains linked to the end date of the previous period to ensure continuity of accounting periods without interruption, which is why it cannot be edited except for the first financial period in the account.
Validation Rules
- Closed financial periods cannot be edited — the “Edit” option does not appear for them.
- When attempting to edit a financial period that belongs to a branch other than the one it was created from, an error message appears indicating that the action can only be performed from branch [branch name].
