Why Isn’t the Journal Saved, With the Message “Cost Center is required”?
This message appears because the Require Cost Centers on Manual Journals option is enabled in General Accounting Settings, and the journal has one or more lines on an account that requires distribution to cost centers, but you didn’t distribute them. So the system refuses to save the journal and shows two messages:
- The Journal could not be saved. Please, try again
- Cost Center is required for ‘Account Name’ #Code, for example: Cost Center is required for ‘Office Supplies’ #5010
The message lists every required account that wasn’t distributed in the journal, with its name and code, in the system’s interface language.
To save the journal:
- Find the journal line for each account shown in the message.
- Click the arrow next to the line to show the cost centers table, then click Add Cost Center.
- Choose the cost center, and enter the percentage or amount.
- Repeat this for each account in the message, then click Save.

Note: To see or change the required accounts, click Manage Accounts in the Cost Center Distribution Rules section of General Accounting Settings. This requires the Edit General Settings permission.
