Impact of Exemption Rules on Sales Invoices

After configuring tax exemption rules in your account, this guide explains how these rules are applied when working with sales invoices and estimates, preventing taxes from being applied to exempt products or clients.

Before You Begin

This guide assumes that the Tax Exemption Rules app is already activated and that at least one exemption rule has been configured and saved in the account. Refer to the “Activating the Tax Exemption Rules App” guide and the “Configuring Exemption Rules” guide if you have not completed these steps yet.

Steps

  1. From the main menu, click Sales.
  2. Create a new Sales Invoice or Estimate as usual.
  3. Select the client and/or product that matches the conditions of one of the previously configured exemption rules.

The system automatically prevents any tax rate above 0% from being applied to products that meet the exemption conditions, with no additional action required.

How the System Works

  • When you select a client or product that matches the conditions of a configured exemption rule, the system automatically prevents any tax rate above 0% from being applied to that product within the invoice or estimate.
  • If a user attempts to select a tax rate higher than 0% for a product covered by an exemption rule, the system prevents this and displays a message indicating that applying the tax is prohibited according to the exemption rules configured in the account.
  • The actual result depends on the Logical Operator selected in the rule when both client and product conditions are present:
    • For “And”: The exemption is applied only when both the client and product conditions are met simultaneously. If only the client condition is met without the product condition, or vice versa, the exemption rule does not apply, and the tax is applied to the product as usual.
    • For “Or”: Meeting either condition, client or product, is sufficient to apply the exemption, even if the other condition is not met.
  • This behavior applies to several sales cycle outputs, including sales invoices and estimates.
